Position Summary

The Medical Director is responsible for the overall medical oversight of withdrawal management services at Rose City Detox. This role ensures that all medical aspects of patient care meet state and federal standards, including OAR 415-050, ASAM Criteria for Levels 3.2-WM and 3.7WM, and applicable laws related to medication-assisted treatment (MAT). The Medical Director collaborates with the leadership team, supervises medical personnel, and contributes to the development and maintenance of clinical protocols and policies.

In accordance with OAR 415-050-0165(3)(c), the Medical Director is responsible for ensuring that a licensed medical provider (LMP) is available to assess, monitor, and manage withdrawal symptoms and medical conditions, authorize admission to withdrawal management services, and provide ongoing medical oversight for patients receiving services.

Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee the medical operations of the withdrawal management program to ensure compliance with Oregon Health Authority and federal regulatory guidelines.
  • Develop, review, and update medical protocols, standing orders, and diagnostic criteria for care in alignment with best practices and OAR requirements.
  • Supervise and support the training of medical staff involved in patient care, including prescribing clinicians and nursing personnel.
  • Participate in weekly on-site meetings with the leadership and medical team.
  • Ensure compliance with federal and state regulations regarding medication-assisted treatment (MAT) and other therapeutic interventions.
  • Review patient admission screenings within 24 hours of receipt and provide medical approval or denial based on the individual’s medical history and condition.
  • Be available for medical consultation and emergencies in accordance with facility needs.
  • Create, revise, and maintain policies and procedures related to medical assessments, histories, and treatment planning.
  • Coordinate with staff to address significant medical conditions requiring on-site treatment.
  • Ensure appropriate laboratory tests are ordered during detox episodes and provide guidance on follow-up care.
  • Oversee screening and clinical care considerations for female clients who may be pregnant.
  • Maintain oversight of infectious disease screening at intake and assist in coordinating referrals for further medical evaluation and treatment.
  • Support coordination of continuing care with primary care providers, when indicated.
  • Participate in internal quality assurance, compliance, and medical peer review activities.
  • Ensure that all licensed medical providers (LMPs), including those on-call, fulfill the responsibilities required under OAR 415-050-0165(3)(c), including medical assessment, withdrawal management oversight, authorization of admission, and ongoing evaluation of patient medical stability throughout the withdrawal episode.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO).
  • Licensed to practice in Oregon and in good standing with the Oregon Medical Board.
  • Board certification (preferred in Addiction Medicine, Psychiatry, or related field).
  • Minimum of two years’ experience in substance use disorder (SUD) treatment and/or withdrawal management.
  • Familiarity with ASAM criteria and medication-assisted treatment protocols.
  • Demonstrated ability to supervise multidisciplinary clinical staff and implement physicianapproved protocols.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of and ability to perform the duties of a licensed medical provider (LMP) as defined under OAR 415-050-0165, including medical assessment, withdrawal symptom management, and ongoing medical oversight.
  • Maintains current professional liability insurance in the amount of at least $1,000,000 per occurrence and $3,000,000 aggregate, as required by contract.
