Behavioral Health Technician / Detox Technician

Position Summary

The Behavioral Health Technician provides compassionate daily support and engagement to clients in the ASAM 3.7 WM detox unit. This role is primarily responsible for maintaining a clean, safe, and therapeutic living environment through room laundering, sanitization, and general housekeeping duties, while actively engaging clients in their daily recovery process. The technician also supports the nursing/LPN team with non-clinical tasks to ensure efficient unit operations and client comfort. All duties are performed under the direction of the Milieu Manager and in close collaboration with nursing staff.

Key Responsibilities

  • Client Engagement & Daily Support
    • Actively engage clients throughout the shift through supportive conversations, encouragement of treatment participation, and assistance with daily living activities (ADLs).
    • Build rapport and promote a recovery-oriented, trauma-informed milieu by modeling healthy behaviors and supporting clients during periods of withdrawal and emotional distress.
    • Escort clients to and from appointments, groups, and meals while fostering positive interactions and program adherence.
    • Assist clients with orientation to the unit, belongings organization, and routine schedule to reduce anxiety and promote stability.
  • Cleaning, Laundering & Sanitization
    • Perform daily and terminal cleaning of client rooms, including stripping, laundering, and remaking beds with fresh linens.
    • Launder all client linens, towels, and personal clothing as needed to maintain hygiene standards.
    • Sanitize high-touch surfaces, bathrooms, common areas, and client spaces using facility-approved disinfectants and infection-control protocols.
    • Maintain overall unit cleanliness and organization to support a safe, therapeutic, and welcoming environment (no budget for external cleaning services).
  • Support to Nursing / LPN Team
    • Prepare and turn over client rooms between admissions and discharges to ensure rapid availability for new intakes.
    • Assist nursing staff with non-clinical tasks such as gathering supplies, transporting clean/dirty linen carts, and helping with client movement or positioning for comfort.
    • Report any observed changes in client presentation, safety concerns, or environmental issues promptly to the nurse on duty.
    • Support admission and discharge processes by inventorying belongings, assisting with room setup, and ensuring a smooth transition for clients.
  • Safety & Documentation
    • Continuously monitor client safety, behavior, and physical well-being in the detox milieu.
    • Complete required shift documentation, room-cleaning logs, and handoff reports accurately and on time.
    • Participate in shift change handoffs and communicate effectively with the multidisciplinary team.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Prior experience in substance use disorder treatment, detox, behavioral health, or residential care strongly preferred.
  • Must successfully complete de-escalation training, CPR/First Aid, and ASAM 3.7WM-specific orientation within 30 days of hire.
  • Ability to perform physical tasks including lifting, bending, pushing linen carts, and standing/walking for extended periods.
  • Successful background check in accordance with OAR 415-050-001 and any additional state/federal requirements for 3.7 WM settings.
